Pangolins don't have a big patch of fur that looks like a beard under their jaw. That's the main reason Chesnaught looks "bald", the beard emphasizes how there's nothing on top of its head.

Same shit with Skeledirge: its smooth, earless/hairless/scaleless cranium wouldn't be as conspicuous if the fire around its jaw wasn't there, but since it is, it makes it look like picrel.

This fucker is so Monster Hunter coded it’s amazing. Literally does a Charge Blade overhead smash as one of his animations and it looks like it’s wearing one of the series armors.

Might be might favorite Mega from the DLC for that reason alone even though base Chestnaught is my least favorite of the trio.

Fair point, but at least Chesnaught can benefit from its when it’s allowed to have, the PLA starters are stuck being forgotten shitters forever.
Also thanks to Lame Freak’s being lazy Jews, Dexit is a thing so no even real Pokémon aren’t safe from being erased from the main series until Lame Freak considers them marketable enough to rejoin, so main benefit of regionals is gone now

I always thought Chesnaught design was meant to evoke a helm more than it being bald, given that the top of his head is the same colour as his back and body, aka the "armored" parts of its body. While his face matches his underarms which would be left unarmored for movement. Also with how it tapers towards the nose.

Skeledirge I am pretty sure is actually meant to evoke a clown as part its design, as all the Paldea starters have a wacky flamboyant performer/carnival theme going on with their final evolutions.

Megas are a ridiculously popular gimmick such that GF kept building on them through ORAS and Gen 7, and skipped over a Gen 5 remix to feature them again. Meanwhile Z moves, dynamax, and teras have had the shelf life of 1 game. It’s pretty clear that there’s a trend towards making them a permanent part of the franchise.

Gen 7 kept them around though, which is a pretty huge distinction from Z moves, dmax, and teras which were localized to just one gen. Megas seem more comparable to the day and night cycle introduced in Gen 2 which arent quite a permanent feature in the series, but are intermittently featured. Gen 10 will almost surely have megas just like Gen 9 let you use the new regional pokemon from PLA.

The problem with regionals is they don't do anything for the OG, it just gets a cousin. It's cool and all but its not like the original gets any respect out of it. Meanwhile a good mega elevates a Pokémon to royalty, literally in Chesnaught's case. It's clear that Game Freak had a mandate from somewhere that Chesnaught had to be good so they had the one competence person there design it. Meanwhile Feraligatr's was made purely out of obligation so they just pawned it of on some random intern not caring if it looked good.
