Zap cannon is basically you going "Kamehameha!", put your hands/extremities together, and shot a large ammount of electricity into a target.
Meanwhile, a railgun is basically using a small electromagnetic, put a small rebar/metal object, and then create a small opening. For some fucking reason, all the magnetic energies shoot out, and the metal object get the american speed limit of "FUCK OFF!", destroying the target.
But a funny fact: turns out that using electricity to charge railguns is still impossible. One prototype for an assault rifle was made, and after shooting the first mag, the battery went from 100 to 69. Railguns are still not a viable choice unless you are using a tank. Basically an overcomplicated catapult.
