Why are legendaries so much more kino in gen 1
They're just sitting there. They're not tied to any storyline quest or anything. They're all optional. You just stumble upon them. They don't even have unique overworld sprites. Yet the feeling of mystery is unmatched. Already by gen 2 this is all gone...
Sometimes simpler really is just better.

Mewtwo is hinted at but the player is given no real indication where it is or if it's even in the game at all. After all Mew isn't in the gen 1 games normally except with a glitch. For all the player knows Mewtwo is the same.
It's nothing like gen 2 onward where the legendaries are literally on the box and the player is forced to encounter them to progress.

With the graphics of the time it was clear that a lot of the stuff you saw was abstractions and the player’s imagination was what made those encounters memorable. I.e. since the overworld sprites aren’t unique you know this isn’t what the encounter is actually supposed to look like and thus your imagination fuels the mystery.
As the games’ graphics got better it becomes harder for a player to not simply take what is shown to them at face value.

They create the feeling of emergent storytelling, like you're making a unique discovery on your journey. The same is true for solving the Snorlax puzzle. If you talk to everyone you'll pick up little bits of info about Snorlax ahead of time, similar to the Mew journals. When you encounter Mewtwo, it feels like you solved a mystery that the adults couldn't figure out. That's empowering for a kid.

RSE onward overhype and under-deliver. You're constantly told how special you are, how you're uniquely qualified to solve conflicts and quell these ancient beasts. Add to that the "industry plant" quality. There's no eureka moment like RBY and GSC, they're just inevitabilities, and the Master Ball is placed right before those third act boss battles, rather than being a second act reward like RBY and GSC.

I was forgiving of how RSE handed them, because it had a more ambitious story, but the way FRLG changed the Moltres encounter was an early indication of where the series was headed. There was something really special about bumping into Moltres in Victory Road, there was an element of risk/reward. Do I risk losing resources, for the chance to catch this strong Pokemon right before the League? In FRLG, it's not placed in the middle of a gauntlet, it's a safe encounter that you see coming.

It absolutely does. The marketing machine pushes the cover legendaries, the story forces you to engage with their stories, their battle encounters are mandatory, and capturing them has become mandatory to the point where they have absurdly high catch rates.

The SV bikes are the first time where their importance feels earned, because they're part of your journey. You could avoid or opt out of catching Mewtwo or Ho-Oh. You don't get that choice in modern games. Whatever buzzword meme definition you have is the issue here, the term is older than you anon, and it's being used correctly here.

Most likely intentional design in Gen 1 (other RPG's that helped shape Tajiri's mindset did that kind of thing - no filter, no brakes, fuck you in particular Probably why Blue shows up at the end of a few dungeons as a final "Get Fucked"). It likely changed as kid feedback pointed to them disliking that kind of effort and as they're aimed at children, instead of autistic retard adults who fixated on them as kids, they clearly felt the need to change how they presented them, most likely as much as because they ALSO wanted kids to get hype for the leggos and pokémon they considered special. Shit, they'd even done it in Gen 1, soon as Charizard started pulling ahead in popularity, they started pushing it more (its shiny being an utter break from its line, in contrast to the other two that kept the base/mid stage colour schemes).

Industry plant is the new payola, when radio stations would overplay specific artists to boost record sales. Intentional. Like >>58668462 said, this fits with Tajiri's ethos and the broader approach at Game Freak. They started off as a fan magazine for tips and cheats, they could even include fake hints just to sell more copies keep readers engaged. Hiding rare Pokemon in optional areas that can be easily missed creates buzz, as players share stories and keep looking for more secrets. That's why the Mew journals were in the game, even after Mew was cut from the dex. Obviously that changed with Morimoto sneaking Mew back in, but the intended scenario was to have the player find Mewtwo and then scour the game to find Mew.

I played RSE as a child too and I much preferred how gen1/LGFR and GSC handled legendaries. Personally I never like "save the world" plots in pokemon. Foiling team rocket doing generic criminal shit as a side quest to the main story of becoming the pokemon champion was charming yet simultaneously more grounded and mature.

This is not what anyone but you would answer. If I asked a random person what Gen 2 is they would say "Gold, Silver, and Crystal" not "Gold, Silver, or Crystal".
To put it this way, if someone says they like Gen 2 the common understanding is that they like GSC not just "any one game between GSC".

Even then, Crystal didn't FORCE you to engage with Suicune beyond the initial "whoops, you let the beasts roam free!" since you'll never see Suicune because it isn't a random roamer, it has fixed encounters. And it's entirely up to you whether or not you follow through on them so you can then encounter, battle and capture it at Tin Tower.
It's not like HGSS where you're outright halted from progressing into Victory Road unless you go check out Ho-Oh or Lugia.

The majority of players skipped Crystal, or they played it years later on VC or emulation. Yes, I know VC is emulation, you don't have to remind us.

GS are the foundation for our collective understanding of Gen 2's structure. I personally prefer Crystal, but I'm not going to sit here and act like it's a touchstone. It should be, but it's not. RSE are the touchstone for this structural change. When the majority of people only played Crystal after the fact, after RSE, the Suicune scenario doesn't seem like a notable departure. If anything, that demonstrates how limited Crystal's narrative encounter was. There's a huge gap between Eusine's brief scenarios compared to the Magma/Aqua story. I'd argue the Snorlax event from RBY was more obtrusive and restrictive than Suicune. But I'm sure you'll ignore all that and assert it's very different because Snorlax wasn't a box legendary.

I think you guys are missing the point a little...
Even if the game doesn't force you to encounter Lugia/Ho-oh in G/S they're on the box so you know they're in the game from the start and the items you need to access them you get during the mandatory story of the game. The game makes it very clear to you these Pokemon are special.
Yes you still have to literally walk to and hit A on them but it's not like the gen 1 legendaries that are only slightly hinted at in one or two small spots on Cinnabar.
In fact Cerulean Cave is deliberately unmarked on the map.
Mewtwo and Zapdos are truly in optional locations the player is likely to miss. Articuno is the most hinted at but when you see it through the binoculars you might just assume it's a normal random Pokemon or like Snorlax. Moltres you truly just stumble upon out of nowhere but that's probably a result of the devs just not finishing a unique location to put it in like the others.
In fact in all later gens legendaries are basically exactly like Snorlax i.e. obstacles you have to fight or catch to progress. Snorlax fits the description of a legendary in gen 1 better than the actual legendaries.

You get them for beating Team Rocket at the Radio Tower which is mandatory.
Also Ho-oh being in a town makes it especially easy to find although this also makes Ho-oh feel special in its own unique way.

Being like Snorlax doesn't make it good. That's actually worse. Being hyped up throughout the game, marketed with the box art, railroaded towards with story segments and ultimately forced to fight it. All for a glorified roadblock, and it's not even that special because all the players will experience the same thing and the effort put into it finding it was the bare minimum required to beat the game.
They are meant to be special for story reasons, but there's a complete disconnect with the actual experience.

At least Snorlax was a complex non-linear puzzle that requires solving. It wasn't just a prize for following the story, it was an obstacle to overcome. You see it as early as badge 2, but it's not blocking your progression. After Rock Tunnel, you see it again and have no clue how to progress. Backtracking to Lavender gives you no clues, it just gives you a new puzzle with the tower. In later games, the Snorax puzzle would be solved after a gym battle in Lavender, like the Sudowoodo bottle. Instead, you have to find a hidden dungeon in the next city, claim a key item, use that to navigate the tower, and only then can you wake Snorlax, and it's the most difficult wild Pokemon you've faced.

It's easy to gloss over now, with hindsight and knowing these games front to back, but there's so many moving parts. I wish more Pokemon encounters had that kind of puzzle solving.

The Meloetta event in SV was a step in the right direction, but anything that oblique is going to be side content and not something teased to the player. This is only really true for mascot legendaries. Lesser legendaries tend to still be out of the way and not really an obstacle in the way of anything else. For example the Regis and Rayquaza in RS are optional and the end goal of their dungeons/quests, they're not really standing in the way of anything else you can only unlock afterwards.
