I know Emerald and/or the remakes are mostly superior for the average person but I’m curious as to what people think of the original Hoenn games on their own merits.

I've never touched Ruby/Sapphire. I just about made it through Emerald once and it was quite a boring run. If i didn't have the fast forward button I wouldn't have made it to the end. Hoenn is so boring.

Very good games. I always hated the mindset some people have that Emerald is better therefore RS are bad. Like, Emerald is 90% the same as RS.

Honestly Emerald doesn't even improve much from RS, it just adds content and makes a few unnecessary changes. The main problem is RS are so barebones that the added content in Emerald really makes Gen III actually feel complete instead of half-assed follow ups due to the games being rushed out in 2 years (being developed simultaneously as fucking Crystal). Platinum is such a monumental improvement from DP that there's no reason to go back to those games, but going back to RS is easier than Emerald because Emerald's greatest value is its post game. If they didn't Dexit nearly 200 mons from RS, we wouldn't have needed KAAANTO remakes
