>>58686052GSC in particular had a lot of Japanese-specific jokemons
Kirinriki (Girafarig) is a Japanese pun meaning "giraffe telekinesis" that's also a palindrome when written in kana, but the English name kept only the palindrome aspect, understandably so because how the hell are you supposed to keep both
Stantler is another example, it and its Japanese name "Odoshishi" are a play on "shishi-odoshi," which is one of those fountains they use in gardens with the bamboo pipe that hits the rock to make a noise that scares off deer, but inverted so instead of "deer scare" it means "scary deer." This is one where you can't really get the point across in English because it's just a super Japan-specific reference
I actually really like this about the gen 2 dex though, as someone who's studying Japanese it's really fun to learn about the original names and get that bit of extra design insight
>>58686067This is exactly how I feel about Toxtricity. "Strinder" was a way better name, "strings" + "salamander" actually tells you what the Pokemon is, and it sounds cool, instead of "hurr durr it's toxic and electric"
I actually hate this name more than Talonflame because it's not only boring, it's also a mouthful. Talonflame is boring and lazy as shit but at least it rolls off the tongue.
