Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Ranked Battle will return to Regulation I indefinitely on January 5th, similarly to Sword and Shield’s final Season 36 switching to Regulation 14.

I'm thinking Champions is in late January/early February.
March is the last month of SV official vgc usage and it's a mid-season game change. I doubt GameFreak will switch the game up without giving competitors some time beforehand to familiarize themselves with Champions.

Champions will launch on or right after pokemon day and official competitions will switch over around May, so that people aren't being expected to buy the game with no notice, but also so they have time to learn the format for worlds

Zero indication it's a paid download on Switch. The only info we have about monetization is that Victory Points can't be directly purchased, which implies there are other in-app purchases or indirect ways of buying VP.

Champions isn't releasing before March. They need to milk ZA's online support more with its ranked battle rewards (Hoenn starter megas until season 7), not to mention it won't release before ZA's Home update which is unlikely to be soon based on previous games.

ZA's whole schedule was pushed ahead when the game got delayed. The original DLC rollout was supposed to start summer 2025. The base game's addition content (3 starters, Diance, Mewtwo) has been condensed to a matter of weeks instead of 6 months. ZA is not going to bump the 30th rollout. It was never intended to be a game with long legs. Champions is an evergreen title that will be supported for years to come, that takes priority.

If ZA was being positioned for a longer lifecycle, they wouldn't be releasing DLC before Christmas. They'll still support it and run ranked events, but Pokemon Day is a marketing event designed to refocus your attention on new products. ZA is Q4 25 and Q1 26. Q2 26 is 30th.

Legends ZA doesn't affect the release schedule of Champions at all.
Not even a little bit, Champions is a necessary step to getting away from Scarlet/Violet. VGC needs the new game to be out sooner than later to give players time to prepare for a brand new format ins a brand new game that's coming out mid-season.
May is way too late. Champions is an early 26 release.
Why would anyone bring up ZA like it's anything other than a spin off?
Is ZA going to have a featured competition at Worlds 26? lol

Which is exactly why it's not going to release while ZA's online support is still supported with big incentives to play. My point is not that ZA is intended to have long legs, quite the opposite, the short ranked seasons shows they're trying to pump out as much "new" content as possible in a short period.

If the leak about Hoenn mega starters being rewards through to season 7 is correct, it lines up with an ending in March just like SV VGC events, indicating that's around the time all competitive support will shift to Champions.

We have to switch to Champions soon because it'll be the game played in the next VGC and the game needs some time for the meta to develop. Champions releasing in the same year Worlds already puts it in the shortest adaptation period for a new game and there's 47 new megas plus 48 old ones returning for the first time since 2019 so it should be a busy period.

Reg D was used for Worlds and it started in July, completely changing the game that people practiced for the first 6 months of SV. I don't think GF gives any fucks about how long tournament players have to adapt, they care more about the general ranked playerbase.

The mega stones have no continuity between ZA and future games. Unlike other end of life content like the shiny bikes or shiny SwSh dogs, they'll always be locked to ZA.

Most players will move onto the new thing and discard the old one. Serious players who move on to Champions aren't going to care about Mega stones that are trapped in the old game. The niche community who will stick with ZA will keep playing during these events, but with ZA's condensed cycle, it's not going to be used to marketing the game like it was originally intended. It's likely the Hoenn event was originally going to be the holiday 2025 distribution. Get players engaged and thinking about Pokemon leading into February 26. But now the entire DLC cycle is taking that position. It has no purpose now, it's just an obligatory event to keep people from complaining.

Champions isn't going to lose steam because ZA has a stone distribution. It's different from SV pausing events, because they're both mainline games, and ZA's launch was a time sensitive priority. There was also a gap for SV to resume events between launch and the DLC.

Champions is on mobile phones. It's already competing for time and screens with Go, Unite, TCG Pocket, Sleep. It's also less time sensitive, unlike ZA which only has a few months. You're acting like ZA will steal audience from Champions, when the reality is, ZA's late events will coincide with Champions and be overlooked.
