It's not your fault. TPC marketed Mewtwo that way because it was more profitable at the time. Same reason Lugia was given a male (talking) voice in the movie.

Movie 1 Mewtwo was always a male character, it wasn't a branding thing like Lugia. He was intentionally modelled after the Phantom of the Opera, specifically his Japanese portrayal by Ichimura Masachika.

Mewtwo's lines were written in Masachika's voice, and production was able to secure him to voice the character.

I don't even remember the last time voice acting hit as hard as the first movie. Did they ever put as much effort into a film as the first?
