People think that way because in XY, the species that were most successful were so shallow that they seemed like fanservice.

Many of the new mega species are relying heavily on references, like that Scarlet Witch movie, where you had to be familiar with some Disney+ content to fully understand it. Fans don't like to think when it's something related to design.

11 years is a LONG time and fan artists have pumped out the best, most rationale cool-looking designs anyways as fan art for their socials. That leaves them with very little choice
