Good thing that by now we know that the most reasonably possible answer to that is that Pokémon have their bodies deconstructed to a small concentrated mass kept inside the Poké Ball while their consciousness experiences a simulated space.

One could say they are... Shrinking, which they indeed are, but of course the word shrink doesn't fully convey the proper answer, it might make people think they're shrunk in a much more literal sense which is course is absurd.

in the original games and manga, they just sit in there like this. It looks snug in there! haha.
anime watchers believe in digitization magic energy mumbo jumbo, but I think they should just watch DIGIMON if Digital Monsters is what they're into! haha.
