The only time I've ever felt that mandela effect thing was finding out blaine never had a magamr in the games till gen 2. Similar to finding out that the games have done everything possible to ignore red having a espeon.

You mean 95% of good Pokemon gag fights came from Kanto. There's a charm to cell animated gag anime that just doesn't work with digipaint. Kanto gag scenes were the last gasps of the old guard

I found it weird they used Blaines beta design considering surely by the time this episode was storyboarded the final Red/Green were probably out.

There is more texture to paint brush strokes. Individual frames of digipen are precisely arranged and cleaned up. Cell animation has a jitter to it, the same way stop motion animation does. There are organic imperfections inherent to the medium that make it more visually interesting. I was still a kid when the industry shifted toward digipaint, it's not nostalgia, I just pay more attention to detail and am more discerning than you seem to be.
