The writer never changed, Kusaka has been the only writer since Pokespe began. It's the artist that changed from Mato to Yamamoto around volume 13.

I also forgot Yamamoto's avatar used to be a Slowpoke, this is the first authors notes I could find where he changed it to Swalot which has now been his main icon for decades. If you see those little drawings with an Electrode and Swalot hanging out, usually at the end of every volume or on the inner cover, it's Kusaka and Yamamoto's avatars.

I haven't read the manga since early into BW2 (that chapter where White 2 or whatever they spelled her name like gets arrested).
Recently I read Scarlet Koito's page on BP and she's very appealing, is the SV manga good? I would be reading it mostly for her, I don't care about Lang.

Despite what /vp/ Matofag Kantofag contrarians say, a lot of people who actually read past the RGB arc feel that while while fine on its own, it doesn't hold up with the later highs of the series. Meanwhile the Yellow arc still seems popular though I don't know how much of it is from fans of Yellow the character. Either way the tone of the series has fluctuated a lot across time, so the Mato era will appeal more or less to different types of people.

A step-by-step guide by Yamamoto to drawing all the dexholders' eyes. Each character has a unique eye shape. The first column starting from the left, top to bottom is the Kanto characters (Red, Green, Blue, Yellow). To the right of the first column, the second column is the Johto characters (Gold, Silver, Crystal) and so on. The last column on the far right is the two Kalos characters X and Y.

The eye shapes reflect some anime personality tropes, like the characters with sharper tsurime corners to their eyes usually having more arrogant personalities, and they often chose water-type starter Pokemon (Silver, Ruby, Platinum). Characters with small pupils tend to be "intense" people in some way (Green, Gold, Silver, Pearl, berserker Ruby). Meanwhile rounded upper eyelids usually mean the character is friendlier, most of the girls have them. Upper eyelids also sloping downwards usually represent a calm and gentle personality (Yellow, Crystal, Diamond).

This is also why Scarlet >>58732719 stands out so much, she has intense eyes for a girl dexholder matching her severe personality.

tbqh, I never see Wally brought up as much regarding the dislike of Emerald.

Besides, Wally being "Emerald" was always a fake rumor that western fans latched on to. Wally being registered as a dex holder in the magazine was a fake-out to prevent spoiling the Emerald arc which began concurrently with the point in RS when the Wally chapters dropped in early 2005. The volume versions rewrote the scene with generic static noises.

I rarely see this brought up anymore these days. Criticisms are moreso due to his godawful design and backstory.

I think Emerald, his whole thing is that he's meant to emcompass every aspect of the franchise at the time which is a nigh-difficult job so his design & arc suffer for it.

Add to this that his arc is pretty meandering until Guile shows up and it's understandable why he's hated
Although between him getting more popular in the ORAS arc through being the only person with common sense and the B2W2 arc, I think he's not the most hated anymore

One thing I enjoy about the Emerald arc is how Guile is unstoppable through most of it, then Gold shows up and stomps him by himself, and then, after the Kanto Dex Holders and Silver get resurrected, he and Red make easy work out of him
It's a nice way to show how experienced the older Holders are at this point, specially if you remember how much trouble Mask of Ice gave Gold in each of their fights

I've read his design was also meant to slightly invoke Colosseum, since his pacifying soil is meant to be a mirror of purification (Ranger didn't release when the arc started).

Have you seen Yamamoto's other original character designs? They're all awful. I used to think he just didn't want to take attention away from the official licensed characters in Pokespe, but then he and Kusaka made a completely unrelated manga (The Three Musketeers) and all three of the main characters he designed were disgusting to look at. It was so bad I can't even find images of it online anymore, the universe purged it.

This manga? jb2448 had raws of the entire thing. It's still there in archived versions of the site.

As much as I'd like to see ZA get the treatment, frankly I'm glad the era of 2 or 3 Pokespe adaptations running at the same time is over so we never get another B2W2 situation.

That would be nice, though the Pokémon manga landscape has been sad since the 3DS. We used to get 2 or 3 adaptations for the likes of Colosseum, Mystery Dungeon, and Ranger. Now, bigger titles like Legends Arceus doesn't have any and I assume Legends Z-A will share the same fate. LGPE did get one, but it was a tutorial one shot on how to play the game.

In Kusaka's attempts to make every dexholder unique, it was just a matter of time before he made a sociopath character.

Also, if Blake despite his autism was given a secret emotional side that cared for his Pokemon/had a crush on Whitley/had a conscious, then he'd just be a Ruby clone. Having real feelings is what sanded off the edgier parts of Ruby's character, leaving him controversial. Meanwhile Blake had those buffers removed, so instead of just being controversial he's largely hated.
