I have met multiple people in-person that grew up with the 3D games, played some of the 2D games (some played the originals via 3DS virtual ware, some emulated the GBA and DS games) and came to the conclusion that the 3DS era was the best era. Talking about Pokémon with them is impossible unless you keep everything as general as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if a good chunk of /vp/ in 2025-2026 experienced this and posts from this perspective.
Also can't believe I'm seeing the Pac-shrug I posted 6 months ago.

Unless you played them as a child when they originally came out, at no point is it worth retroactively playing then. I was a 90s kid but I never got to play them at the time because of the whole "pokemon is the devil" nonsense.

I grew up on the GBA and DS games, didn't get around to playing Red until my mid-teens, and it was frankly one of the best Pokémon games I've ever played. It actually put into perspective why so many people in the 90s loved playing Pokémon by themselves and with their friends. It offered all of the novelty that came from something like Tamagotchi (I grew up with Giga Pets and Cube World) while still being a pretty fun and simple video game.

Pokemon was unironically more fun before the Special and Physical/Special split
Yeah sure bugged type interactions and poorly designed moves were a problem but it wouldn't be a problem if later gens fixed it while continuing to use the Gen 1 system

so true. dunno what the issue was with it before. also when you could just catch a pokemon and level it up and get more stats. instead of worrying about the nature/ability/etc etc etc etc etc that got obsessed over and all kids were doing was wasting a shit load of their life catching the same pokemon over and over and breeding them with all of these items and resetting over and over for the ones where you can't do that. figuring out all these fucked up algorithms to breed the perfect pokemon. and now they have items that let you just change that shit because it was a retarded idea and now you need to know 8974530453 different fucking retarded items and where to get them to just make the ideal one so that shit might as well not even be a thing in the first place because it's just a huge time sink waste of time that isn't fun. I can defend pokemon adding "having an ability" but not rng multiple abilities where sometimes they're just shit. and there was no reason to have natures because you could just get more of whatever stat you wanted. so pokemon were still different until you maxed out every stat which wasn't even necessary.

Agreed. Breeding was a fucking stupid addition to Pokemon. This is a franchise about growing closer to your team of monsters, that goes completely against the eugenics simulator that encourages you to dump all the Pokemon that aren't perfect.
The story is telling you friendship and bonds are the most important thing in the world, the gameplay is telling you to ditch friendship and bonds for better weapons.
