Autists love to meticulously categorise things, especially humans, because they struggle to understand human aspects based on emotions or other things you can't break down into pure logic or facts. They find those things overwhelming cause they are hard to grasp for someone who doesn't understand (other) humans. To make the world less overwhelming for themselves, they put people into categories, break them down into factual things as much as possible. To not be overwhelmed with the prospect of seeing people as individuals. So yeah, race is a very obvious one here to reduce individuals into something you can grasp in a more logical way.
