Moon Stone feels like it's meant to be more important than it ended up being
Like the whole existence of Moon Ball, in a generation without new Moon Stone evos and all the Moon Stone mons are in Kanto except the Nidos who are already easy to catch
The only new Moon Stone evos after Gen 1 are Delcatty in Gen 3 and Musharna in Gen 5

to be fair, the moon stone evolves the same number of pokemon as the fire, water, and ice stones (6 each, post gen 7), and more than the sun, shiny, dusk, and dawn stones. the only stones that evolve more are leaf and thunder, with 7 each.
the most unfortunate thing about the stones are the localization of the shiny and dusk stones, which are light and darkness in japanese. naming the darkness stone "dusk" in english would make the dawn stone seem like its duo ("dusk and dawn"), when in reality the shiny and dusk stones are more similar "counterparts" than dusk and dawn stones.

The Ice Stone got a decent amount of uses, especially since they retconned Glaceon and Crabominable to evolve using it (excellent decision imo).
imo they should retcon some trade evolutions to work with the other stones as well.

They should be used more.
Moon Stone for Umbreon, Ursaluna, Swoobat.
Sun Stone for Espeon, Milotic, Cherrim.
Shiny Stone for Alolanchu, Gardevoir, Ribombee.
Dusk Stone for Hisui Typhlosion, Hisui Samurott, Gothitelle, Hisui Decidueye, Frosmoth.

Off the top of my head, all the Haunter, Dusclops, Phantump and Pumpkaboo could evolve using the Dusk Stone, while Feebas, Spritzee, Swirlix could evolve using the Shiny Stone.

I noticed that Gen 8 broke a pattern of evolution stones being directly used on Pokémon to make them evolve, while other evolution-inducing items had to be held. Now there are a bunch of items that work like evolution stones.

I would imagine it's intentional, since there's really no other things linking those lines, other than gaining at type upon evolving; one was pure Psychic (at the time) and gained the Fighting type, the other pure Ice and gained Ghost.
If it didn't exist, I could see Kirlia -> Gallade being fine with the Shiny Stone and Snorunt -> Froslass working fine with the Dusk Stone, so it seems like the gender-evo thing was the stone's purpose.

yea, it's called "awekening stone" and it's meant to awaken pokemon's hidden power

they botched shiny stone becuse its supposed to be dawn stone as counterpart to dusk stone

It seems like a good mechanic with a bunch of applications but I don't think any single gen completely nails it. Limiting a powerful mon's evolution until a certain point in the game so you can't just level grind for it. Or making a risk/reward for when exactly to evolve a mon due to learn set stuff. Or making it so maybe you can get a stronk mon early if you jump through hoops to get the stone. Or force a choice early in a playthrough. Gen 1 gets the stones mostly right but then doesn't have ways to regain some of the stones. Gen 2 has in theory the Bug Catching contest reward that can nab you the Sun Stone early if you place well in the contest, but the mons that use it suck so it ends up just being a Dex completion quest.

Predominantly, evolution stones should apply their respective typing on a Pokemon that previously didn't have it (like the gen 1 eeveelutions), or have an appropriate thematic result (Sunflora evolving with a sun stone). Some stone Evo's have no reason to exist other than to justify the stones existence.
