the campaign is goated, the post game boss is goated, and the Arceus encounter is goated, but I started shiny hunting pikachu in it recently and it's been the most boring brain rot ever. The game just has absolutely nothing fun after you complete the pokedex and catch Arceus

Among modern pokémon games, it's the best or to be fair the only one worth playing (sans Luminescent Platinum mod).
Unless, of course, you want to play games prior to Gen6, which are better overall.

just played a bit of arceus. catching pokemon in the wild is incredibly satisfying. the transition into battle mode is also cool. the feeling of surveying pokemon and learning about them is cool, even if the execution isn't the best. some very refreshing ideas that i want to see developed further. Z-A basically lacks everything i like about it.

just played a bit of Arceus. The graphics are way uglier than I remember, the animations feel still and the character customization is awful. Catching Pokémon isn’t as satisfying as I remember, the weird clicking noise gets annoying fast, and I’m constantly having to craft new items. Basically an annoying experience that I hope is never replicated. Good thing Z-A exists.

It never was. What little "gameplay" there is, is mostly Farmville-tier of filling out braindead checklists in a barren grass field. By far the laziest piece of shit that Game Freak has ever put their name on, and that's saying something.

Arceus is one of those games that are more than the sum of its parts.
It's a poorly balanced game, a pseudo open world where you are severely limited in what you can do and how you interact with the world, and the world is so empty that it severely detracts from the experience.

But jesus christ, no pokemon game made me wish I lived in that world like it did. It made me feel like a kid beating red for the first time again.

That's my feeling as well. Yeah the game isn't "good" but it made me feel like I was actually playing Pokemon rather than a bog-standard RPG with pokemon in it. It would've been interesting if there'd been enough confidence in it to have it be the christmas release that year and give S/V another year in the oven. Both could've used the time and polish.
