It is a shame they stopped giving him new Pokemon about halfway through the dex, would’ve been cool to see Mienfoo, Pawniard, Tynamo, Litwick, Karrablast, Rufflet, Cubchoo and/or Deino on his team.

They wanted to soft-reboot and do Kanto again, but none of the final stage starters were popular enough to warrant full evolution like what happened with Charizard, and someone on the anime team really wanted to keep Pignite around even though they could've just used Krookodile instead.

This is fucking abysmal holy shit. Not a single one of these pokemon has the "cool" factor for kids to get hyped over. Seriously though, why the fuck did they lock in a fucking Pignite? The least popular of the unova starter evos? Everything about this team is boring as shit jesus christ.

They could've made Ash do the Unova leaque twice. So he could use as many Pokemon as he had then. They literally had no idea what to do and made up Decolora Adventures.
Even what they did with team rocket made sense, they switched their pokemon from woobat/yamask to amoonguss/frillish.

He didn't really have a Johto team, it was just a continuation of his Kanto team. He didn't reset his team until Hoenn.
Remember he was still using mons like Charizard and Snorlax as the backbone of his Johto squad.

Unova team would have been better if they evolved them. Krookodile and Leavanny carried their weight enough for that to be true. If they had let Ash evolve Scraggy, Snivy or even Palpitoed it would have been a more memorable team. Not that it would have saved Unova from being a horrible anime but still

He barely used his Johto mons. Heracross was Oak'd right away, Phanpy and Larvitar were babies that couldn't battle, Bulbasaur was there for more than half the region, and he just called in Charizard or Snorlax for his actual serious battles.
