I think that trade lets you get Rhydon/Dodrio before they're normally obtainable. That's better than a lot of in-game trades

That advice is kinda completely wrong.
Dragonair, has awful stats, and the only dragon type move you'd learn in gen 2 before claire is twister. All of Claire's pokemon know dragonbreath.
Teaching Rydon strength would probably be more effective.

Sure, Dragonite is a lot more exciting then Rydon, but thats 15+ levels away.

For a low price of going south, finding a fishing spot, fishing for a 10% encounter rate with a good rod (super rod is in kanto so no insta-dragonairs either), grinding 20 levels a mon with the second highest exp requirement for level 30 and performing a trade (assuming you got that 50/50 female) you get to brag about having a rhydon 13 levels before it should be legally allowed to exist.
Or you could just beat Clair and reach the victory road to catch a rhyhorn in the time it will take you to do all that, your choice.

Dragonair is in slow exp rate and training it can take quite a while.
Rhydon with experience bonus from trade will be much easier to train.
Unsurprisingly, Merrick is a fucking retard.

Obvioudly, one should take into consideration also Rhydon's kind of barebone movepool. But non-STAB normal moves will be enough for a while and EQ TM is available in VR if anyone does not want to wait till level 65. There's also Dig, I suppose?

yeah surely the faster exp group + trade exp bonus will definitely outweigh the time it takes to get a female dragonair instead of just beating clair and catching a rhydon yourself

Good luck getting Dragonair to level 55 before postgame. Rhydon is also a really late evolution normally, so being able to get one 7 levels earlier is cool.

I was moreso talking about future gens. Yeah, gen 1 is the only time in-game trades were actually implemented well, but being able to get stuff early is the next best thing to them having exclusive mons

Because the Rhydon you catch in Victory Road will probably be the highest level pokemon on your team with the exception of your starter. You also obtain the TM for earthquake there.

I take that back. It's only level 35. However, you would have to grind a Dratini up 20 levels (15 if you soft reset for a female Dratini to pawn her off when she evolves).

The correct answer is to catch Geodude at the start of the game and crush everything.
