I don't hate X, I just recognized very early on that Y was going to be preferable.
We had setup sweepers in the 2014 meta, it felt like Zard X didn't do enough damage even with tough claws and to this day doesn't have a great dragon stab without some drawback. The opportunity cost for using mega Y precluded using others.
Zard Y on the other hand had a sun boosted-stab spread move plus 1 turn solar beam(which doesn't see much play anymore).

Y is unironically one of the best megas, saying that as somebody who's not a particularly big Charizard fan
Makes Charizard look more sleek and draconic without slapping tons of dumb shit on it like a good number of gen 6 megas
The only issue I could give it is that the arm wing things look a little weird, but they aren't bad

It does the same thing as Mega Sharpedo. Adds more spikes from head to tail and then repeats another random detail because they didn't know what else to do (the scars with Sharpedo and the goofy little wings for Charizard) but people will only pretend to like one.
