let me teach you about something called identifying your wincon, anon. this example will be vgc but the principles apply to singles too. imagine your opponent has a team of miraidon, ampharos, regieleki, and lilligant. you have a swampert, a talonflame, an umbreon, and a lunala. you know your swampert can 3v1 the electric types (its bulky enough to live any coverage they might have and KO in return), but it obviously gets outsped and killed by the lilligant. your wincon for this match is KOing the lilligant while still having swampert healthy.
therefore, you can expend any of your other resources to kill lilligant. it doesnt matter if all 3 of your other mons die in the process of removing her, so long as swamperts alive when she goes down, because at that point you win the game. what im saying is that dont think of it as "im working to the point of having my opponents four pokemon be dead", think of it as "im working towards the point where my remaining pokemon guarantee a win against my opponents remaining pokemon", and develop your skills in identifying that point (its obviously not usually as clear cut as the example i gave, but it typically exists somewhere easier than KOing all 4 and being able to spot your best win con is an important skill). this is even more potent in singles, where any one pokemon's walling potential is stronger since doubling up isnt a thing. in the example above, swampert might theoertically be at risk if two of the opponents electric types hit him with their softer coverage moves on the same turn, but whether a pokemon walls another is more binary in singles because that cant happen.
if your wincon is using swords dance to setup a sweep, that wincon is reached only after anything that threatens it is dealt with. so use your other resources to draw out and KO any unaware mons or mons thatd outspeed your sweeper, *then* go for the sweep
