And despite having EXP scaling Gen 5 looks and plays basically the same as Gen 4. By extension, Gen 3 and 4 are similar despite some massive changes between the two games, which is why they're grouped together. Gen 1 and 2 being on what is essentially the same engine but heavily modified also puts them together, but they're also different enough from everything after that they can't easily be grouped anywhere else. This is the only logical grouping to put them in unfortunately. Maybe you can group Gen 6-8 together on structural reasons given the general design shift Gen 9 and 10 seem to be going for, but I think we're slightly early for that at the moment.
