I feel like the reason they're doing this is that all design space has been explored at this point. Pokemon is not a very complicated game after all. After 9 generations, the only innovation left is stacking 2-3 moves/abilities together and calling it a new one. Even gimmicks are running low on ideas, they're already back to recycling megas. I wouldn't be surprised if they pivoted to gimmick rotation rather than coming up with wholly new ones each generation.

It's actually Ability > Type > Moves > Stats. That's why you have Pokemon with relatively low BSTs hacking it with legendaries/psuedo-legendaries/event legendaries. Rotom's stats aren't that great, but Rotom-W has been a competitive mainstay for over a decade off of the power of its type and ability.

I dunno, that could just work. It'd be incredibly specific, but with HP Ice or HP Rock, it could actually function as an emergency check to certain Pokemon. With that bulk, it's practically immortal. Even a +2 Tera-Normal Explosion from Landorus-T doesn't even come close to KOing it.

It only became good in Gen 4 after the fact due to the council's decisions to unban Jirachi and Latias. Gen 4 became a lot slower paced and based around residual damage, so Clefable ended up becoming a better choice than Blissey due to having Heavy Duty Boots built in. Ban Jirachi and Latias and Clefable goes back down to sub-OU usage.

Clefable doesn't see play in Gen 5 OU either. You can't just pick out Gen 4 and say it was always good.

If you actually paid attention to why Clefable rose to prominence, it's because of the crazy residual damage and status spreading caused by Jirachi + Skarmory + Tyranitar. That very same residual damage is why Infernape fell off.

It's the same reason Blissey finally saw more usage in Gen 8 than did Chansey. Ever since Eviolite came out, Chansey has been the superior choice, but with Heavy Duty Boots releasing, Blissey suddenly became much better than Chansey despite much lower bulk.

Typing IS relevant since it became a meta pick ever since it became Fairy type and got +10 SpA. Those are the only changes from Gen 5 (where it's RU) and Gen 6+ (where it's OU).

Bastiodon runs a Tera Fighting + Body Press set that can actually put in work all the way up through RU. It's also an absolute menace in RandBats since the only real counter to it is a Ghost type and you never know if your opponent is packing one in the back.

absolutely yes. When there's over 1000 pokemon and you can only use 6 of them, typing and stats can only go so far to make pokemon defining or unique or stand out.

The best way to make pokemon stand out and have their own identity is through ability and signature moves. I want even more unique abilities, and old useless abilities like "immunity to accuracy being dropped" need to be totally revamped
