It had a lot of problems on release and things were getting better for the first year or two, but the damage was already done because they rushed it out too quickly. Eventually they threw in a P2W upgrade system, lots of power creep, and other issues that made everything more and more fucked over time. Very likely that the original devs aren't working on it anymore with how stupid some of it is.
If you can look past all that, it's still technically alive I guess. Team Battle is active but it's a boring drone race like it's always been and Battle Royale is so dead you often can't find matches. I mainly play Turf Match with friends these days, which is a limited time mode that only shows up for one day every 2-3 weeks. It's the best mode in the game by far, but obviously that's not ideal and even that mode has its own issues. So even if you want to play Ninjala despite everything like I do, there's no good way to do so most of the time.
But hey, at least the lackluster anime is about to reach 200 episodes. I don't know how the Pokemon anime is doing these days, but if the quality's been dropping for the past few years now you know where OLM's resources went.
