Pokemon pushed a bunch of spinoffs out when the brand was still young. Today, spinoffs don't sell and the regular games are experimenting more.

Everyone is gonna say GAME FREAK BAD but the real answer is spinoffs aren't financially viable anymore.

It used to be games were so cheap to make, you could slap a brand on anything and make your money back. Even if you didn't, it was common wisdom that having lots of products on shelves at all times was good for your brand even if the products weren't individually profitable, or were low-quality. It was also just good business for independent or small studios, since this stuff was cheap to make and paid the bills.

That's not the case anymore. You can't afford to split your staff between multiple projects, they take too long to make and you need results every quarter. People also just don't buy spinoffs anymore, and diluting your brand is now seen as bad for business. Quick money is all from mobile games you can outsource to Asia. Why spend money making a good TCG spinoff when there's a hundred times more profit in a pay to win gachaslop mobage? Why bother with something experimental like Hey You Pikachu that won't even make its development costs back?

As for why the individual, mainline games suck, it's because game freak unironically bad.

Where have you been for the last decade? WE DON'T. You get like one Mario game a year, if that. The Switch 1 only had Tennis, Golf, and Soccer across eight years as far as spinoffs go. I'll even throw in Kart 8 Deluxe, even though it's a port of a Wii U game no one played. Other than that there was Odyssey and Wonder. Nintendo is being stingy with Mario and it's a shame because his games are good.
