Gen 1 is an unfinished, buggy mess of dogshit that doesn't even work as it was intended to, to say nothing of its dogshit pokemon lineup (90% of the Kanto dex is complete ass visually and mechanically) and awful movepools (if you can even call the 5 moves every pokemon learns a pool, they're more like movepuddles).
Gen 2 is Gen 1 with some duct tape and has most of the same overall issues with movepools and variety (a lot of gen 2's designs are also pure unfettered ass).
Gen 3 is the awkward puberty of the franchise where it tries to be more but fails spectacularly, but at least we have functional kanto games now because of it.
Gen 4 is where the franchise found its footing, with the physical/special split, a huge expansion in movepools across the board, and better implementation of Abilities.
Gen 5 traded mechanical improvements for a worse overall game experience, with the most dialogue and cutscenes in the franchise by far grinding the game to a halt every 5 seconds to listen to some usless NPC ramble about their bullshit I don't care about as well as half the dex being bootlegs of gen 1 pokemon, while having the best EXP system, the best bug type designs, and another huge injection of movepool size to all the old pokemon.
Gen 6 saw the flop that was Gen 5 and decided "why don't we just do kanto but worse". mega evolution as a gimmick didn't really do what it needed to and the pokemon of the region don't get to shine because there's too many shitmons from gens 1-3 in the region on top of gen 6's lackluster dex.
