Absurd character bashing is at least funny, and it’s the kind of thing you can only find in fanfic. It’s like a personal stamp on the story by the author: “I’m the guy who has a ton of beef with Blaine, for some reason.”

Up until this past weekend, the inspiration. I had a few story ideas on the backburner that will remain there, but I got the spark to start something new and degenerate.
Begs the question, for those who write/read PMD fanfics, how do you view the dungeons themselves? Phenomena that randomly occur and take over an area? Structures that always existed in the world? Something else, perhaps? Every writer seems to have a different take on them and I like to see how others view them.

I've always thought Pokemon could be so much more than what it chooses to be. For the longest time I believed in a generic shounen-y adaptation of game's plot would print money and was so confused as to why they never did it (kid's franchise, I know). So I finally got the balls to "be the change I want to see in the world," and I've been having a blast.

Shounen in the sense that it's targeted at adolescent boys. Think Naruto/One Piece in tone. Obviously I don't think it's gotta be gritty and edgy, but the anime's target audience is definitely much younger.

In general? It's the only thing I'm both half good at and enjoy, for pokemon specifically it's just something that I'm nostalgic for that I always thought had potential.

I started writing because I also wanted to make isekai journey-slop, but while writing it just felt so trite and I couldn't find a way of making it new in a way that others hadn't yet done. So I outlined what it would have looked like with all the beats and started writing at it's end with a new isekaijin, the character inverse of the first fully actualized protagonist, and went from there.

But mostly it's because SIs are typically "standard" humans and they don't treat the world with too much respect that it can make shallow readers uncomfortable(like >>58875838 said, basically Marvel-esque distancing)

the core problem is most people, and almost all internet fanfic authors, are boring fucking people
the largest problem after that is that having an SI with pre-existing setting knowledge always makes for predictable and boring plots; they already know how it all ends
removes most of the stakes unless the author genuinely can write it so the villains are proactive when shit starts to butterfly
but most fanfic authors won't write themselves failing in any meaningful way
thus: dogshit abounds

this is why OC inserts, ie isekai, work so much better as a concept
even if most of those are shit as well
you're creating an actual character to punt into a setting, instead of putting your tubby lardass in

OC characters are boring in world people who are just regular folk. A self insert can flip the board and use otherworldly knowledge and meta knowledge to take advantage of the locals. There's also fish out of water. How does someone deal with the new culture, how do they adapt to clearly being unfamiliar with local rules and traditions and culture. It's a perfect world building tool for exploring everything, and lets you justifiably interfere with the story.

If your MC has nothing special about them, then the story is probably boring as shit. You could write the greatest journey fic ever with an OC character that doesn't interact with the actual content, and it'll be mediocre at best. If that character starts interfering with the OG characters and cast, then why are they doing that? They don't know who the MC is, they wouldn't have a reason for doing so except meta knowledge from the author. It comes off forced. Worse still: OC characters that have no idea about anything in their own world, as if they were from another world. 'reborn as a baby' stories have this issue where the MC seemingly did nothing for 10-15 years and has no knowledge about anything.

OC characters are often lame and gay and limit the author. An OC character in the original setting is often worthless. A SI isekai is just more fun for the reader and the community. It's enjoyable to see the clash of cultures. Also >>58875838 but unironically, there's nothing wrong with that.

Although I wouldn't say an OC character is worthless, you just have to give them a special trait aside from metaknowledge. Really Isekaijin tend to also have other differentiating qualities that set them apart, but they can take qualities from their own world that the writer can have be unique to them. N
utrition man is a prime example with his backstory as a zookeeper in the past life, or the glowie from BoD and his tropes knowledge. Of course that raises the question how people in universe aren't aware of these things. But I feel like most readers have the suspension of disbelief to ignore that sort of thing unless the narrative points it out as odd.
Although personally I'm not fond of reincarnator type Isekaijin, to me one of the upside of a child protag is that as a child, being vulnerable in ways an adult is not, there's more tension. But giving a child meta knowledge and the brain of an adult sort of deflates that tension a little.
Although I have to say, OC's can interact with the main plot and change things, just write them doing that in the story. Put them on a collision course with the antag, have them adventure with Ash and the gang if you want, really nobody is stopping you even if it might seem harder than writing an Isekaijin.

You seem to have some weird obsession about this. You're asking how the average person doesn't know Arceus is actually real and is the god of the world, or some obscure ancient secret? What are they supposed to do, go on the internet and look it up? The pokemon world is more complicated technically than Earth with the introduction of magic. Asking how the natives don't know something that you only know because of meta knowledge is odd. It's the exact opposite of what you're saying. It would be unbelievable if everyone knew all these things. It would also be boring as fuck.

That's not what I was saying, my example was the protag from BoD, who uses his knowledge of tropes. I was saying, 'if these tropes are essentially laws of the world, doesn't it make sense people would know about them.' At the same time, I don't think it's too important if something like that comes up. Besides I don't think knowing Arceus is god would change the DPP plot that much, people are already trying to stop team galactic since their evil and an OC has plenty of reasons to try to stop most villainous gangs.
But of course not everyone has to no these thing.

or in the most entertaining way: the story is a quest
so the OC has no knowledge, and now the readers have to try and work their imperfect meta knowledge against whatever changes the QM and their own actions make in the world
the mindgames can be exquisite to see with a good QM

99% of fanfictions are worthless with a large portion of them being effectively a single scene or idea wrapped into a poor short story, or just softcore porn disguising itself as fanfiction, or just woefully incomplete after the initial setup of the story like few chapters, sometimes up to 20, before being dropped before any actual events in story occur. The number of stories worth reading that actually go anywhere are quite few and are buried, and they don't fit into these overbearing assumptions and memes everyone throws around.

Seeing people complaining about tropes when the stories they take the tropes from are objectively garbage to begin with is just stupid and dishonest.

I like to think of them as "shower fictions". Fiction ideas someone came up with in the shower, wrote down the general idea of in a few chapters or so, and then moved on. Not sure if there's another name for the phenomena.

Nah, shouting attacks are a great tool for controlling the pace of a battle. Of course like anything it can be done poorly.

I like to have both combatants shout orders at the same time as we get to watch how those commands play out. Keeps each 'turn' so to speak easier to follow.

I get it, this is the thing that really had me struggle to write a pokemon fic for quite sometime. A 'standard league battle', (whatever that is lol), with two trainers standing on opposite ends of an empty arena as they bark orders out seemed hard to write. Even when removing the flat terrain and adding in a new environment I struggled.
It's what put me off writing a journey/champion fic, even if I know I could just write around them it irked me. Although that's just my struggles, I need to read more pokefic to see how other authors have dealt with the issue.

A Blastoise spamming hydro cannon as the enemy keeps popping protect may struggle to intuit that their strongest attack is never going to succeed. Or that the weird dark type move that doesn't come naturally to them is a better fit against an opponent. Depends. For most trainers it would be a sign of being bad, but higher level trainers might counter attack instead.

Having a narrator explain the complexity of simple situations is good. They can be an in story narrator like a sportscaster, or just in writing, or in the mind of the trainer (though in the mind of the trainer is overused in my opinion and becomes a cheap excuse to have the character go "SHIT" without saying it out loud).

I treat it sort of like D&D attunement to magical items. It takes a bit of effort to attune to a magical item that's already attuned to something else(can be circumvented with thief/etc), and the amount & quality of items that a pokemon can attune to depends on their own ability.
As for items that wouldn't technically need attunement, like berries, I treat them as legally requiring attunement for official matches. Even vanity items legally require attunement. Basically, if it doesn't get sucked into the pokeball together with them then it's not legal in a league match.

BoC is/was hugely influential, these are mostly Isekaijin tropes anyways. Besides some of these are just common, even then things like a specifically underage harem aren't mentioned. Although like with the redundant politics spaces it might overlap too much with normal harem.

The first two are classics. Very long adventure drama stories involving all the gen 1-4 Dexholders fighting evil to save the world. Tries to stick to canon. Later stories inclide the gen 5-7 Dexholders. Lots of great action and melodrama with some death. There is shipping. Characters like Blue (the girl) and most after gen 3 aren't written that well. The author's pet is Platinum, which might hurt your experience if you already hate her for being a Mary Sue. The author also starts hating random characters and switching opinions on ships later on, so they just disappear from later stories.

Very long Battle Royale/killing game story featuring all the Dexholders up to gen 6. Lots of action, drama, death and some gore. Some Dexholders are more in character than others, especially the gen 4-6 guys who get the short end of the stick, but otherwise it's not too bad. There's some shipping but it's not the main focus.

Hyphen's Granite Cave arc and its resolution were absolute peak fiction. I really liked the fic-original music that popped up a couple chapters afterward, and the art is pretty cool too. The beginning of the fic can be rough at times, though.

Since nobody posted a summary, it's about a Ralts disguising herself as a human and running Hoenn's Gym gauntlet in order to become the champion, gaining enough power and influence in the process to prevent her hidden Kirlia village from getting steamrolled by humanity once they get found. It's also explicitly set in Emerald, so there's no Ash. Or Fairy-type. Or Pokespeech.

Notably, it's over a decade old, still updating (slowly), and is the earliest example of 'Pokemon as a trainer' that I can think of. Maybe the very first to exist in any substantial manner.

So shouting 'Dodge it!' isn't just ordering the obvious, the auric intent also brushes across your pokemon's consciousness and gives them a better idea of the danger as you perceive it and/or your idea of how best to evade it. And because of how aura translation works you technically don't even need to say dodge, you can just shout "Shit!" and the pokemon would get some instinctual idea of what's going on.

IWTTS had a lot of well composed battles. They were a bit beefy at times though, and later on you could go into them knowing the MC was just gonna lose, but earlier ones did well. I don't remember one sticking out, only that the gym battles always felt intense for what they were.
