This game has dogshit main characters. The friend group are the most realistic Game Freak has ever written, but they're stuck with a charisma vacuum story thanks to Team Flare and Rival's grandma still being retarded as fuck. Most people just care about Corbeau, Canari, Jacinthe and Gwynn. It's not really rocket science the Gym Leader replacements are more popular than the Evil Team replacements, that's always been the case

Once you get access to mega evolution you fight four factions to keep rising in the ranking and the one that gatekeeps rank A, which makes you the champion of the royale, is Grisham, the fifth boss after you beat the previous four. Jacinthe even has the same rematch level as the other four while Grisham is stronger

Also, barista? I guess it works with his backstory - an ex-child soldier trained by criminal organization decided to pick up a "peaceful" job after being abandoned. But it kind of lacking grandiose and flair fitting for the final challenge. Maybe if he would change outfit for the fight or something...

What hate and scorn? This game is too afraid to show it. Every single character involved Z-A that is involved with, or related to, Team Flare is "redeemed" and/or rewarded for their associations, each is member is framed positively. The game is too cowardly to show these characters facing a moment where they meet one of their victims and the victim goes "No, what you did was wrong and I do not forgive you". It's easy to tell a story about redemption when every single element of the crime is suppressed, ignored, and glossed over. That being said Grisham is clearly supposed to be the game's equivalent of Alain, but if they wanted him to be popular, they probably shouldn't have made him look like a clown.

Comes so late into the game, after lots of characters who are actually all those things, so everyone has already picked up their faves already. He doesn't bring anything to the table but be Team Flare infodump.

Grisham is basically Alain except he didn't got rewarded for doing all the bad thing for Team Flare. Grisham also mentioned being scorned by the people of Lumiose city even though that city wasn't actually affected by Team Flare unlike the anime where Lysandre unleashed dark vine that destroyed a lot of home and hurt people yet not a single people on Lumiose city scorn off Alain even though he was the reason Team Flare got everything they need for their genocide plan.

Taunie is Nemona, retards. The royale is beaten by reaching rank A (Vinnie explicitly calls you ONE of the champions of the royale, the other one being the rival), and fighting Taunie is to determine which one of the two champions, the two rank A trainers, is better at using mega evolution. It's the same as the victory road storyline from SV, you fight the four bosses (Rika, Poppy, Larry and Hassel/Canari, Ivor, Corbeau and Jacinthe), then the strongest that gatekeeps the champion status (Grisham/Geeta) and then, as a champion, challenge your rival (Taunie/Nemona) also a champion, to see which one is the strongest.
