they NEED their yearly slop, otherwise they're being starved!
i've already said how if pokemon became a live service franchise that gets updated regularly, not only would it completely get rid of the natdex issue, but also give the developers at lamefreak more time to work on a single good game and continue to make it better instead of shitting out a half assed game every year with completely different art direction (and even theme of the game)
they can put cosmetics in unite because it's one of the main features of the game
if they put this feature in a regular pokemon game, then they'd have to put it in all future pokemon titles otherwise they'd be considered downgrades, and they'd definitely not be up for that commitment with the current formula
