It really isn't, it's pretty standard for Japanese shonen media. It just feels dark and edgy because Pokemon is a kodomo franchise (i.e. catered to very young children), so the angles are completely different.

I don't know if it's because you hate Dragonite and Pikachu or hate "bad megas" that don't change much, but that's just the thing here, they look similar to certain base pokemon.
