The insistence that each region MUST clearly take after and resemble a real locale is stifling region design as a whole. This is made worse by the fact that every country that isn't Japan is being filtered through the lens of Japanese tourists which turns the in-game regions into shallow copies where visual resemblance is foremost while actual cultural practices and quirks range from non-existent to insulting parody.
As it is now, Gamefreak's team of tourist researchers are too hemmed in by their own Japanese cultural framework and so fail to actually engage with or understand the countries they visit.

Paldea's player characters being carbon copy clones in uniform is an offense.
Place more emphasis on exploring untamed, hazardous landscapes. Less concrete and metal.
Also, another thing contributing to sterile regions is the fact that the mytho/spirit/religious elements of real places is completely cut and erased. Instead, every region is a slightly futuristic nothingness where "culture" amounts to characters repeating "technology is amazing!" and "Humans and Pokemon should get along!"
