Why is GF afraid to release them? Every other game announced at the time has been released so far but those two.

The only sane answer here. They could drop both on Pokémon day, one on Pokémon day and the other halfway through the year, or stagger them throughout the year as part of a Pokémon content drip for the whole year.

Both Nintendo and GF have always been weird about which Pokémon spinoffs they care about. I assumed Colo and XD sold mid, but no, they both sold pretty well compared with other GameCube games. Colo sold about as much as Mystery Dungeon Red, or the first two Ranger games. Harder to tell VS Mystery Dungeon Time and Darkness as their sales figures are combined.

Maybe it really is just because Colo was a bit too edgy for Pokémon (it's really not that edgy, but maybe in Nintendo's eyes it was) and XD got fucked over by association.

Edgy isn't an excuse. Look at the discussion around the studios which made the Orre games, Gamefreak basically got outshined by a studio which had no prior experience with Pokemon, worked with the limitations that were a thing at the time and created a more concise experience as opposed to the mainline titles. Notice how most of the staff behind the studio were either moved around to other projects or were put into the mobile lock until it got splintered apart.

Even the Gamecube controller adapter doesn't work. People tested it out with Wind Waker and couldn't get the tingle tuner to work.

The newer games are objectively better to play. Yes, the graphics and Miror B are nostalgic and the snag ball and shadow Pokemon are cool, but the gameplay is just slow. It takes forever to do anything. You have to play the game with speedup enabled or you go insane.

Nintendo wanted it to be edgy, they're the ones who funded Colo. They wanted to boost cube sales by having an exclusive Pokemon RPG that would help sell the idea that cube was the older sibling from Gameboy. That was always the concept for cube and GBA.

They're very rooted in that NCL hardware mentality. They're games built specifically for the Gamecube Link Cable. If anything held them back or felt embarrassed, it was GF. It wasn't their project, and it represents a time when Nintendo could strong arm the brand. The first one sold well enough to warrant a sequel, but the whole idea of poaching outside devs from Enix to then work on their own Pokemon RPG. That whole period really set the tone for the way TPC, and TPCi in particular, became so stringent and paranoid.

The fact that doubles are required and every boss uses an actual strategy puts it above basically every other Pokemon game. Only Gen 7 comes close. Every other Pokemon game doesn't require you to use anything other than a single Pokemon, especially the post-EXP share games because they're so easy with it on (again, only Gen 7 approaches competence with it off and is a much better experience without it).
