because the redesigns are miles better than the originals and i'm saying this as a huge hoennfag who grew up with RSE. i still like classic shelly, but OG archie looks lame as fuck to me now.
ORAS also released before wokefatigue/race swaps were literally everywhere, and i'm pretty sure that team aqua are probably just meant to be islanders or okinawan anyway.

Sure, that picture you posted doesn't do him justice, but when i think of Archie i think of anime Archie. The original Archie is far more iconic and fits with the classic pokemon art style and tone. If you were to put brown Archie in the classic anime he'd look out of place as fuck.

Imo the magma redesigns gave that team much needed personality but the aqua redesigns went way overboard. I dont even mind the race swap but they look less like criminals and more like circus performers.

That's my take too. OG Archie looks like a gang leader you'd find on the docks while new Archie looks like a flashy fantasy pirate moviestar.
