Outside, Aldith approached her Seviper, which now had a massive, swollen bulge in its midsection. The outline of a human form was clearly visible, curled up tight. She placed both hands on the warm, taut scales and felt a weak, shuddering movement from within.
“Shhh, my beautiful,” she cooed to the serpent, then raised her voice, knowing Cynthia could hear her, muffled but audible, from inside the belly. “Do you feel that, Champion? That’s your new world. It’s going to get much hotter. Much tighter. Those juices will soften your skin, then your muscles…” She leaned close to the distended stomach, her lips nearly touching the scale. “…then your bones. You’ll become a slurry. A nutrient soup. And your friend Diantha… she’ll be a lovely dessert.”
Inside the acid bath, Cynthia heard every word. The burning on her skin was nothing compared to the inferno of despair in her soul. She tried to move, to shift, but every motion sloshed the digestive fluids, spreading the burning agony. The churning walls pressed in on her, a constant, intimate, and utterly inescapable embrace. The air was running out. Each breath was a scorching gasp. The squelching, gurgling sounds of the active stomach were the only symphony left to her, a horrifying lullaby for her final, agonizing moments. Her body, the body that had walked champion’s halls and ancient ruins, was now just a meal, slowly, tenderly being prepared for absorption. And as the darkness at the edges of her mind began to merge with the total darkness surrounding her, the last coherent thought was of Diantha’s smile, soon to be swallowed by the same endless, hungry night.
