If you're talking about just general lack of battle facilities yeah BW doesn't have much but B2W2 has about the same amount as the Gen 4 one (quality of really any iteration nonwithstanding, Battle Palace should count against Emerald personally). I don't respect any format with an easy cheese strat, and unfortunately Battle Maisons formats basically all have a cheese strat. I'm willing to blame part of this on B2W2 introducing True Ant and providing the AI no out, but between that not being fixed and FEAR being added it's just not great. I guess you could play like a retard to get some challenge out of it but that's what the main game is already for and ORAS satisfies that urge well enough because Hoenn is well designed.

If you only count the PWT as one then the Battle Institute despite being kinda dogshit puts it at the same amount of different buildings as the Gen 4 version. I dunno if I'd count the Battle Institute, so having one less is still about the same amount and less of a decrease than the decrease from Emerald to Platinum. On the other hand, Rental PWT is so different compared to every other PWT format because it's just bad Battle Factory. If you include the Download tournaments (which are trivial to obtain if you're playing on anything newer than a DS Lite and relatively easy if not) you can throw in a format similar to Japanese Pokemon Stadium 2's Nintendo Cups (not to be confused with our Pokemon Stadium 2 which is GS for them, or our version of Japanese Pokemon Stadium 2 having none of those formats for some reason). Type Expert is a novel enough team building exercise that it justifies itself well enough over the rather simplistic Battle Institute as something worthwhile to play. Hell, Type Expert alone is more interesting for team building than the entirety of the Battle Maison formats. But if you do want to say the Battle Institute doesn't count, I'm willing to agree as it and the very similar Gen 6 restaurants just feel extremely mediocre and don't offer distinct enough gameplay.

How is the format about navigation and resource management not the same type of thing as the formats about navigation and resource management?
Type Expert PWT alone provides more engaging content than the Battle Maison by virtue of having to understand the strengths and weaknesses of Pokemon of a certain type in comparison with each other as opposed to just spamming two different strategies. It also creates better variety than the Battle Dome or Battle Hall, being the closest functional equivalent just looking at them and being more about risk management (which in the Dome's case sort of overlaps with Battle Pike which sort of hybridizes that and Battle Pyramid's resource management). And if anyone is counting the Battle Palace for anything then I get to count at least one PWT format. Even if you hate every default tournament, playing against lobotomized versions of actual real world Pokemon teams that actually went to and in at least one case per division won the World Championship has to count for something. That's more legitimate than International Crystal Level 10 Battle Tower that gets rolled over by Aerodactyl.

Srs do you think beating Battle Frontier bullshit is some “skill intensive thing that makes you good at Pokemon”? The enemies all use sets designed to steal wins with RNG to waste your time so you have to start over and you can’t even change your lead so there’s a shitload of outright luck

Yes, because good teambuilding can mitigate the effects of some of the RNG without reducing the skill level required to get long streaks. In comparison, the Battle Maison (and Gen 5 singles as well as International Crystal Level 10 Battle Tower) have AI quirks that completely shut down any potential challenge simply by bringing certain Pokemon (FEAR Aron, True Ant, Aerodactyl). Not all formats are created equal of course, the ones with more skill expression tend to be better, and that usually happens because there's something other than just battling which is why a Battle Frontier is better than just a Battle Tower clone. It's also why the Battle Palace is the worst, even when you go in with a team tailor made to take advantage of the format it comes down to chance. About the only remote exception is the Battle Factory which is extremely RNG dependent but also extremely skill intensive due to limited options forcing you to adapt.
