he air in the clearing on Route 210 was still, the only sound the gentle rustle of leaves in the ancient Sinnoh pines. Cynthia had chosen this isolated path for its solitude, a place to think, to plan, to be alone with the weight of her championship. She never imagined it would be the place where that weight was crushed forever.
The attack came from the shadows of the treeline, a blur of purple and crimson so fast her champion’s reflexes were only enough to widen her silver eyes. A thick, muscular coil, cold and impossibly strong, snapped around her torso with a wet thwump, pinning her arms to her sides and driving the air from her lungs in a pained gasp.
“Wha—!”
“Good boy, Seviper. So good.”
The voice was a smug, feminine purr from behind her. Cynthia thrashed, her boots scrambling for purchase on the mossy earth, but the serpent’s grip was absolute. She could feel every individual scale, hard and unyielding, pressing into the fabric of her trench coat, into her ribs. She was lifted, her feet dangling, the world tilting. And then she saw it.
The Seviper’s head swayed before her, its forked tongue flicking out to taste her terror. Its eyes were slits of malevolent intelligence. But it was the mouth that froze Cynthia’s blood. It yawned open, a pink maw lined with rows of backward-curving teeth, and at the front, two massive, dripping fangs, each as long as her hand. Venom glistened on their needle-sharp tips. She stared, a primal, paralyzing fear locking her in place. This wasn’t a battle. This was a predation.
“Reach for them,” the voice taunted. “Go on. I know you want to.”
