I remember it being strange when someone started calling his dog "she" because dogs are all "he"s, at least they had been for the decade and a half I had been alive up til then, and when he explained "well my dog IS a girl" I thought about it, said "well I guess that sort of makes sense, sounds weird though". That was the first time I had heard people refer to animals as anything other than "he".
In retrospect I bet he was a furry.
