Why is starting a new game even possible if you can't save it?

Just lost 40 minutes of gameplay because of it. I never started a new game in Gen4+ before. Is this seen as a positive change? Is there any way to save this?

Just delete the old save at the main menu, this has been consistent for over a decade

yeah but you have to delete the existing save first before you start a new one, OP cannot keep their current save file without returning to the main menu and deleting the original save, but if they return to the main menu they lose their current progress

barely anything happened until now. Which is a good thing I guess since I have to restart, but still. My two mons have not so bad natures, I bet if I restart its gonna be bad.
