It's not like he was only taking on weak opponents before this. He defeated a magmar, an electabuzz, a powerful poliwrath and managed to put up a good enough fight against a dragonite. Having something like that be a weakling among its own kind makes no sense unless the Charizard species as a whole is pseudolegendary tier in the anime
