People used mega Zard to set sun. Using your mega for a field condition isn't unheard of, especially if it's a Pokemon that can pull its weight. Given, I wish mega stones did something if you didn't mega evolve. Most megas you HAVE to mega, meaning you can really only run one or two on your team.

Doubt.
Unless we get another Scarlet/Violet Reg (which is unconscionable) in a year where Worlds has to be played on Champions, I imagine it's a Pokemon day release.
There are Tournaments in April that I believe will be played on Champions to give the meta some time to develop.

iirc unite was announced at one pokemon day and then launched at the next one (might have been like the following week as opposed to day of, but close enough). seems pretty reasonable to assume champions is the same, especially considering we know the official format timeline

Highly doubt Champions will launch a week after Pokemon Day because that's when Pokopia releases. It's either gonna be on or a day after Pokemon Day or at the end of March so it doesn't step on Pokopias toes.

Besides the obvious strong/buffed returners (namely the Big 3, Zard Y, Metagross, Gardevoir, maybe Swampert if only just cause dynamic speed) what megas do you think are actually gonna do well in Champions, either previously underwhelming returners or new ones?

Golisopod's bulk works out to being functionally pretty similar to Iron Hands of all things, and you can survive on Leech Life spam (something Scizor distinctly does NOT get) for solid consistent damage output pretty well in theory. The fire Weakness is pretty dire though but it does pretty hard counter stuff like Rillaboom and Psyspam which is pretty funny

It's so hard to say because we don't know the ZA megas abilities yet. We also don't know how movesets will work, like if ZA TM moves will be legal. Fake Out is a TM in ZA which would drastically change the viability of a bunch of mons if they suddenly got access to it.

Anyway my guess is Moves are somewhere between ZA and SV TMs with maybe some new stuff mixed in. I'm assuming they wont have radical moveset reductions at the very least. A lot of movesets probably wont change too much save particulars like Fake Out, and a lot of Megas are very much in the "as long as the ability isn't actively detrimental" kind of space (like Golisopod) but obviously stuff like Intimidate Immunities, active damage boosts, or support stuff like Weather/Terrain or Shadow Tag can HUGELY increase a pokemon past that baseline viability

It removes Protect mind games and reduces the pool of viable Pokemon. Mystic Water Surging Strikes is a "you must be this tall to enter" barrier. Anything that can't take it basically isn't viable. Unseen Fist should be nerfed to do reduced damage through Protect like Max and Z moves did.

Yeah I think we'll see a lot of brand new abilities with the ZA megas compared to the old ones that mostly just got existing abilities. We already know Raichu is getting something crazy since it boosts it's own attack when using Volt Tackle in ZA.

Garchomp pretty much sucks due to losing Ground though
Special Water/Ground STAB is a hugely relevant niche that has VERY few pokemon that can meaningfully take advantage of it, in Reg H its basically just Ursaluna, Primarina, and Pelipper, and at higher power levels its basically just Lando-I and Kyogre. Special Dragon meanwhile has a LOT more competition with and without using your Mega, and Garchomp built Specially can NOT flex if you decide to play 2 megas

Absol is insanely frail and super dies to any Fairy damage, if it doesn't have Sucker Punch its screwed the second Flutter is legal

Lucario probably has the most potential? Fast Heal Pulse + Special Steel STAB for Fairies without having to worry about Intimidate is definitely notable, though its still pretty frail. Vacuum Wave if it keeps it could go insane
Theres also the whole thing about how weve never really had a good Special Fighting type so idk if it gets Mega Launcher or something could be interesting

Lopunny and its Mega form got access to U-turn, Triple Axel, and Close Combat in ZA and Scrappy was changed to no longer get affected by intimidate. M-Lopunny now gets to fire off the fastest unboosted Fake-out in the game with STAB without needing to worry about ghost immunity and can now pivot away from anything that would threaten it.

And like its not like Draco Meteor/Dragon Pulse spam is bad or whatever, its just theres so many decent to meta relevant Special Dragon types that just being fast in top also doesnt really change much when you still lose your item, it really needs a fucked up ability to compensate

The fact that the lost STAB is Ground though is absolutely definitely relevant though, idk if it would've outdamaged Lando-I but Special Ground+Dragon STAB at that SpA and Speed wouldve been just insane for the SE coverage of Ground alone and how it matches into Special Ground specifically being so good

Zard Y's ability to guarantee you win the weather war is always going to keep him relevant in one way or another, especially with how powerful Sun teams have become in Gen 9 with Protosynthesis being a thing. Torkoal and Ninetails got used all the time in lower power formats purely just because of their ability to set the weather.

Rotating formats are great, dont get me wrong. I doubt they'll rotate the gimmicks and all mons each 1-3 months tho.
Lets get a hypothetical scenario: First gimmick is Mega. They'll launch February 27th with a Season 0.
Season 1 goes from March 11th -> April 30th.
Season 2 goes from May 1st -> May 31st.
Season 3 June, Season 4 July, then it stops for Worlds and Season 5 afterwards they rotate the gimmick around.

The question is how they'll balance it between two seasons. Will they have the power to remove moves from overpowered mons? Take some of their base stats, create restriction clauses that are not "legendary/box mons/mythical"?

My best guess is that they'll rotate which mons are considered legal to use in a format, similar to what they already did with Series 6 back in 2020 where the top 10 most used mons in the previous format were banned from being used.

In early XY people definitely experimented with it in VGC. The problem was it was just a giant physical wall. It’s Sp Def was okay but didn’t help much if two Pokemon were going into it at the same time (especially attackers like Zard Y, special or mixed Mega Lucario, and other Pokemon like Chandelure, Salamence, Dragonite, etc.)

Even with Mega TTar around I still think Mega Zard Y will find usage. You’re not going to run into Mega TTar every match and against a mega TTar you’re probably not bringing something that dies to an unboosted Rock Slide. Best solution is having a second Mega on the team for the sole purpose of dealing with that scenario if it comes up.

I don't think so, from what I recall in the double restricted format you were almost always going to DMax one of your restricteds unless it was Zard. The rich got richer generally.

What Megas that were previously good in singles/doubles do people think are going to have fallen off? I don’t think Mega Charizard X will be anywhere near as popular as it was back in Gen 6. Too much has come out since then that counters it pretty hard. On the flip side, I think Mega Venasaur could see a resurgence due to how bulky it is and could decently wall a lot of the top current Pokemon that aren’t Tornadus.

Zard X didn't see a whole lot of play even in its "heyday."
It did have 2 regional wins in 2018 though which is respectable since that was one of the highest power non-restricted metas ever.
Wolfe and Boyt ran it to victory. Zard Y saw quite a bit more success that same year though.

The restricted legendaries being removed just meant that another set of powerful dynamax abusers simply took their place and the lower power level centralized the meta around dynamax even further because you couldn't take hits as well from the max move spams. As a side effect everything being centralized around dynamaxing also made sleep absurdly broken, landing even just one usually shut down your opponents entire play and they'd be unable to do anything but watch as your own dynamaxxed mon raped their entire team.

One thing he mentioned is that both Dynamax and Tera become very read-heavy metas that are more about resource management and forcing your opponent to reveal or expend his resource(dyna/tera) and then punishing them, rather than playing the game more straight forward.
It's an extra layer of variability that some people may like. Personally I like tera, but dislike Dyna.

How many singles tournaments did it win on cart?
Zard X had problems even in singles because using a mega has an opportunity cost and there were other DD sweepers. With that said, the Fire/Dragon typing is excellent.

They'll still kind of be meme seasons.
To really make mythicals impactful, they would have to be in a single mythical format where restricteds are disallowed.
Personally I think Arceus is available enough that it should be allowed in with the restricted legendaries. It's not like it's anywhere close to busted in the first place.

First turn is still decided by base form speed (unless they change this in champions). So Mega Blaziken should still be faster than 151 megas on turn 2 after a speed boost.

I just checked and it doesn't learn any of the good physical ghost moves. I don't see it being too effective with just Knock Off as its only good STAB. I would have thought they would at least give it Poltergeist.

I have zero hopes and expectations in Champion's format rotations because TPC are fucking retarded and pick their formats and make their banlists with their ass just after taking a big fat shit.
