They have giant 8 month long promotion schedules that typically reveal an all new never before seen (other than by hackers) mythical Pokemon a couple months in, then host the first ever event for this mythical either as a wi-fi password giveaway for those that preorder a movie ticket or as a wireless event in the theater itself right before each screening of the movie.
This stuff all sort of gets lost in the western releases where the mythical gets announced on
pokemon.com with no mention of a movie and then the movie gets dumped on Netflix and treated as an extra long anime episode, but this is why the movies actually get made. Which is also why all the movies for each gen need to be planned before the gen actually releases so the mythicals and related shit is actually present in the game. And since Covid fucked over the gen 8 movies, Game Freak presumably decided to not do any gen 9 movies at all.
