In various media, Birch appears more often as May's dad than Norman. In fact, the ashnime is the only case of Norman being May's father. Which shows that Brendan is meant to be the canonical protagonist of RSE / ORAS while May is the rival. As for the anime, Brendan was simply missing to take the spot of the protag.

Not even a cameo lol. After Gen4, they stopped featuring MCs at all (aside from Serena). So only Gold/Ethan, Brendan, Lucas, Kris, Lyra, May, Dawn, and Serena made an appearence.
