Clearer than before. Close.
A fresh, different terror seized Cynthia’s heart. Diantha.
“Please… no…” Cynthia tried to speak, but it came out as a weak bubble in the fluid.
“Oh, I think our first course can hear us,” Aldith sang out, her voice dripping with malicious joy. “Hello in there, Champion! I brought a friend for you. Someone to share your… accommodations.”
Cynthia felt a violent thrashing against the stomach wall from the outside. A series of impacts, followed by a muffled, female scream of protest. It was elegant, melodic, even in its terror. Diantha.
“Let her go! Aldith, you monster!” Cynthia’s mind screamed, but her body could only manage a feeble squirm.
“Now, now, Champion Diantha,” Aldith’s voice was a mockery of courtesy. “Resistance is so undignified. And futile. You saw what happened to your security detail. My Sevvy is very thorough. Now, be a good Kalosian flower and look your fate in the mouth.”
The sounds became clearer. Cynthia, pressed against the stomach wall, could hear the rustle of fabric, the scrape of heels on dirt, and Diantha’s strained, pleading voice. “Why are you doing this? What could you possibly gain? I have wealth, influence—name your price!”
Aldith’s laughter was a sharp, cruel thing.
