I moved to a new city and started my early adult life around the time these games came out. The hype cycle was way more exciting than the actual games turned out to be. I'm hoping Gen 10 delivers the island concept much more realistically.

i have little nostalgia for that gen, it was the gen when i finally bought a console and the games, i was emulating until gen 5, at the time there was not good 3ds emulators, so i didn't play gen 6 until later

Galar really was missing that oomf in its marketing hiding most of the Pokemon, while also no weird subspecies equivalent to legendaries.

It started pretty strong, but dexit kneecapped it, and most of the reveals weren't that great
SV was even worse, there was next to zero hype for it, not that it mattered since to effortlessly sold anyway, but still.

LGPE technically has one but it came out after the games did. Before that it was only avaliable to play at events.
The demos for ORAS and SM were pretty cool though. It was neat having a little standalone experience you could play each day leading up to release while getting some bonuses to take with you.

The first games to come out after I got into Pokémon were ORAS, but I remember SM more because a Minecraft streamer I watched at the time transitioned into being a full-time Pokémon streamer after blowing up from shiny hunting and giving away the shiny Pokémon he hunted for shortly after the games launched. The Switch era of Pokémon fucked him over, though, since everyone that wanted a shiny would just go to one of the 24/7 sysbot streams. Then, when COVID hit and shiny hunting became mainstream, he couldn't compete with the streamers that streamed 12 hours a day while shiny hunting and watching Family Guy, so he abandoned gaming and does shitty tech videos that get 12 views.

We know from the Teraleak that SM was originally going to have the Rainbow Rocket plot, an actual Zygarde story featuring Guzzlord and Lysandre (along with revealing Zygarde was born in Alola), Giovanni reconciling with Silver, more to Cyrus meeting Rotom again, and finally the reveal that all Pokémon were actually Ultra Beasts that gradually replaced real world animals like Indian Elephants.

To say SM's story ambitions were high would be an understatement.

Leaked documents showing SM's story originally planned to resolve loose ends and fan theories from the very beginning of the franchise all the way up to XY/ORAS, which you can find the specifics of in the archived Teraleak threads. It's a far cry from the "lol I forgot to implement trials" that we saw from the final. Ohmori truly bit off more than he could chew.

Same, but I remember getting filtered by all the handholding, tutorials, cutscenes, etc. to the point that I don't think I ever finished it. I'd like to say that it was me finishing uni at that point and wanting to move on with my life but I keep coming back to Showdown and the TCG every few years so maybe it's just that the games actually suck.

I was eleven at the time and rushed out of my school (the Presents was at 3pm, I got let out at 3:15) and begged for my dad’s phone. When I saw the announcement I started screaming like a retard and my dad told me to shut the fuck up but I was so excited I couldn’t contain it. Followed every bit of news religiously, even when we went on vacations in the spring and summer I’d ask for my dad’s phone or use the 3DS’ internet browser to check for any new info or leaks. It finally came out on my birthday and I was ecstatic that day waiting to get home and played long into the night. I loved every second of it. They’re far from perfect but I have such fond memories of these games.
