Also SoulSilver already uses SS, so there is a precedence for it to be fine.

If you use HGSS then yes, the SS portion stands for SoulSilver.
Not one uses "SS" on its own to refer to a singular game, with context you would easily figure out that SS refers to gen 8.

Tell that to B for Blue/Black, R for Red/Ruby, S for Silver/Sapphire/Scarlet and so on.

You can just look at the image and see that they're using "SM" for Sun and Moon. It seems they only use SwSh over SS and WiWa over WW (IIRC, they also use DPPt).

Do you also say Ef Arr El Jii for FRLG?
You might write it as FRLG, but you dont pronounce it letter by letter.
So you would write WW for gen 10, but still read/pronounce it as Wind/Wave.
