Depending on how you interpret them, they have a notable amount of ship teasing especially after GSC, it's just usually more subtle than Red/Yellow or Ruby/Sapphire which is shoved in your face. Gold/Crystal obviously not canon but has much more basis than crackships like Green/Blue. It's very popular too, they still get a lot of Twitter fanart on the JP side.

Now that AI slop is accessible to anyone with a computer there's no barrier to "creating" fanart anymore. As much as I want to believe there's some kind of Yellow fanbase resurgence, it's less likely than an AI related explanation since Special has been falling off for years. There's also a whole new grifting industry right now for shitty amateur artists to adjust their work with heavy AI slop filters and farm online engagement leading to much more output in general.
