>B-but ZA just came out, we already had what we had been waiting for delivered!
Before I start the thread let me say that I don't consider ZA to be a worthy compilation of all the ideas that were originally planned for Z, on top of being your average pokemon game with barely any effort put into it.

I think it's fairly well known by now that at some point Gamefreak was working on Z's development, around the time the gen 3 remakes were being made, but ultimately scrapped leaving only a few buggy drafts to show us what they worked on. This was mostly due to them wanting to overlap the series's 20th anniversary with the release of a new gen, leading to Z being eliminated from the equation and the rushed initial versions of gen 7 being made.
What really pisses me off about this is that X and Y were clearly developed with a third version in mind, feeling pretty barren and being infamous for not having an actual postgame, in which they just throw the third legendary in a random cave with no explanation whatsoever. They obviously planned to expand the region while also giving Zygarde a lore, like they did with the past 3 gens. The reason why Rayquaza and Giratina are so beloved is that they were properly handled in their versions, had they not come out, they would just be considered shoved legendaries with no purpose that looked cool, in fact that's pretty much what they were in R/S and D/P.
Z also had ton of potential, and that's not my own baseless conjecture, the anime and gen 7 showed us just how much Kalos and Zygarde had to offer, immagine having played through a gen 6 game with 10% and 100% forms and a similar storyline as XYZ (which btw it still annoys me how they featured the Z in the anime's name while not actually releasing the game).
