Gold and Silver were mostly designed to put in a lot of their left over Pokemon designs, as well as ideas they couldn't get into Red and Green

The Pokemon series was also not meant to go beyond 2 generations, so in a lot of ways, Gold and Silver are in fact Red and Green 2, which explains a lot of the weirder design choices

Developed as a direct sequel, so yes its DNA is Red & Green 2
Their vision for Pokemon was a game, maybe a sequel or two and the complementary ~60 episode show before wrapping up for good before it became the biggest creative IP in the world

It's a direct sequel more than any other Pokemon game outside of maybe B2W2 or ZA and even those are a stretch. If it wasn't blatantly obvious from the moment Team Rocket was there it's clear it was the case when you went to the Pokemon League. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's also kind of a holdover from an earlier version of the game that took a Dragon Quest 2 approach compared to a Dragon Quest 3 one when it came to map design choices (rather than narrative ones), so it can feel a little weird. Geographically it's the correct choice, regardless of any of that.

Not quite, the ones hidden in postgame are the ones whose designs were literally not finished until weeks before shipping
Houndour and Houndoom are the only exceptions since they were largely unchanged since 1997 but still got fucked over for reasons only GF knows

Pokemon GS is a sequel to pokemon. Pokemon RS and its spinoffs are a reboot of the pokemon series. Pokemon DP is a sequel to pokemon RS. Pokemon BW is a reboot of the reboot of the pokemon series. Around this point I stopped caring about the games.

Yes, it's clearly meant to be a sequel rather than a stand alone generation. Having said that 1.5 is disingenuous; it's the generation that added far and away the most new features.

DQ2 is a sequel to the first game, where the descendants of the protagonist of the first game became rulers of kingdoms beyond the first game's continent that aren't seen in the game, and the area from the first game is shrunk down considerably in the overworld. Dragon Quest 3 is about the ancestor of the protagonist of the first game traveling to the continent from the first game, where it's more or less similar in size and is treated as the endgame. I hope the comparisons between the Spaceworld and release versions of Gen 2 are fairly obvious.

Damn I shouldn't have started with DQ3 then. I got to the point where you enter the dark world or whatever and thought "shit, everything so far was only the first half?!" If I was a kid maybe I'd get as excited for it as I was for Kanto in GS but nowadays I can't stand long games.

If you played the DQ HD2D remake, I've heard they intended for you to start with 3 then move onto 1&2. Going into the dark world does lose a lot of its impact when you start with 3, I don't think people knew it was a prequel to DQ1 before that point in the original.

Look, back then there wasn't a Gen 2. It was just Pokemon 2. There was mean to work as a standalone game but to complement the already existing. There wasn't a Johto Pokedex just an extended Pokedex were the already 151 got to 200+. Is not a replacement as future games does as Hoenn does with the Hoenn dex were the new Pokemon get to shine above old mons and the old mons gets relegated to filler.

The new Pokemon are more of a complement. A curiosity to keep the exploration. Not mean to be their own thing. You aren't supposed to use a full team of Johto Pokemon, you are supposed to use a mix of new and old. That is the intended way. That is the reason of the distribution really.

Just look even how is the Pokedex composed:

In your way following what I can main story you can get a total of 3 of the new evolutions of Kanto mons: Crobat, Espeon/Umbreon.

6 of the new evos are Trades. Not really meant for main story. Fucking 6.

7 babies pre-evos which are Johto Pokemon but 1) you don't find them in the wild and 2)They evolve and in what? Kanto mons anyway. Exception is Tyrogue which is found in an optional dungeon, late game, also evolve into 2 previosly unrelated kanto mons making them part of the same family, but wait. Is the only one of the babies with their own Johto evo. Just is the most difficult to get.

The game encourages you to use the Kanto mons above the new ones. Example: The Lapras in fridays which the game encourages you to use because the Surf sprite is Lapras. Then main story you are supposed to get the Shiny Gyarados in the Lake of Rage, which if Gold had a canon team it would definitely be part of it.

What if you wanted to use a new Dragon-type mon? Well, the only new one is Kingdra which is Trade. No, Dratini line is very much still the dragon line representative of Johto. The Pseudo-dragon even. You can seeing this as Dratini is the premium mon in the Dragon Den.

The Kanto mons have most of their movepools updated and improved while the Johto ones are mostly mediocre.

Johto does not exist as their own region. Is meant as a whole with Kanto. Remember that the Champion of the League is the Champion of Kanto and Johto.

So a lot of those "this doesn't feel like a Pokemon" complaints people had about Gen 3 back in the day was the point, it was to not limit themselves to what they had already made for Gen 1 and 2, and expand

They obviously pussied out on making Gen 3 a reboot however, which would be the same case with Gen 5, since that would also attempt a reboot, but it commits a bit more, since you aren't allowed to use any old Pokemon till the post game in BW

They straight up ran out of time to playtest the game properly, Masuda had them pumping it out in less than a year. It's shocking that it's genuinely more enjoyable overall compared to Gen 1 when Gen 1 is a pretty solid brisk adventure, but I guess that's the power of focusing in making a good world. It's a shame they didn't remember that during XY's development, but given the ousted Masuda after that I think some other people might have got it (Ohmori isn't one of them, fuck that guy).
