I was born in ‘97 and don’t miss gen 1/2 all that much. I liked the atmosphere in some ways a bit more but going back on the 3ds and trying to play them is a slog. The PC system and lack of boxes in particular really threw me for a loop. I guess when you’re like 4 or 5 and it’s all you know it’s fine but with all the quality of life improvements since gen 3 it makes it hard to go back. I still don’t understand why they didn’t add the day/night cycle in hgss all the way through, they just added a filter that makes it look like it’s cloudy instead.

No it’s not, I’m mid 30s and I haven’t even beat Erika yet. Haven’t done any grinding at all even, just battled every trainer I come across once and even went out of my way to put most of my high level pokemon in the pc to evolve low level mons along the way. My Raichu would be that Raichu’s level if I didn’t put it on the sidelines almost constantly.

Correct. It's the only legitimate way to make the E4 hard which is understandable. The solution is always immediately obvious for any kids playing which is good too. It's just boring having to grind it out when you're accustomed to the modern games that speed up that up for you.

Zoomers, on the other hand, have grown up with save states, speedup and rewind functionality, none of which these FRLG ports have.

This is why I wish Gens 1 and 2 got a rerelease on Switch instead. FRLG is more of a slog due to the Gen 3 movepools/abilities on NPCs, and there are fewer ways to cheese the game and complete the dex or have more varied playthroughs with glitches.

You keep your EXP when you lose. You keep all your items too. The only thing you lose is the money you don't spend. Each attempt you come back stronger. It's literally impossible to not eventually win unless your entire team is so shit it gets swept by the first opponent.

You don't need to match their level, they don't have EVs or badge boost. I do like to get my team to at least level 50 for the E4 but that is needed for my playstyle (first caught Pokemon, no items, no TMs, Set style)

Yeah it just sucks because the 3DS eshop is shut down now. I would’ve rather they released Ruby and Sapphire on Switch if they had to do Gen 3, since frankly they are better games than FRLG (especially if you include Emerald). FRLG are really tedious because you are stuck with the same wild encounter rates and NPC trainers as Gen 1, but all the enemies have Gen 3 moves and abilities, which means more STAB and annoying shit like Poison Point and Cute Charm. Lavender Town is particularly bad because you go from Gen 1 where you can use Dig on all the Gastly and Haunter to Gen 3 where they all have Levitate, and nothing can really outspeed+oneshot them with a super effective move aside from Kadabra. If you don’t oneshot them then you get to eat Lick, Nightshade, and Hypnosis repeatedly.

I dunno I think Hoenn has the easiest E4 with Drake and Steven being challenge. Kanto is super hard cause the E4 also runs Johto. I guess Bruno uses Machamp for Kanto, Hitmontop for Johto. There's nothing you can do against Agatha cause old Gengar has no real weakness. It's just hitting the thing hard and hopes it dies.

I didn't train when I beat them. I just gave Snorlax Hyper Beam and let its nuke everything while hoping my surfer uses Blizzard. The original 150 were actual monsters and not mascots.

To be honest, even as a baby I haven't struggled with the E4 in these classic titles, nor new ones save few bulky mons or rematch buffs using hyper offense kits.
Gen 2 and 3 had enough filler TMs with strong enough utility and most E4 mons stats or level up movesets were nothing exceptional. Headbutt Hypnosis Stantler felt like a killing machine in Gen 2 and Gen 3 had enough cheese mons too.
Gengar is a legit cunt, no debate, even if it didn't have special STAB back then, off type special coverage was enough with Levitate, it's all a matter of outspeeding and not using slow frail mixed attackers.

The Sevii Island content isn't great, but if you loved Red and Blue, FRLG is pretty neat. Has an Elite Four rematch and the Switch version let's you get pokemon that were Nintendo event only on GBA after you beat the Elite Four, by just giving you event tickets.

I feel like having them have higher lvl pokemons is mandatory because I've been one shotting everything since route 2.

If you're losing to Agatha's Gengar, you're losing to a Pokemon with the same damage output as Toxapex (65 vs 63). I don't care if it it's immune to Ground type attacks, you hit that fucker with anything neutral and it's going down.
