I feel like the new pokemon protag design philosophy is to encourage us to customize it as soon as possible rather than creating stand-out characters like dawn or hilda lol

The stupid will argue it happened in Gen 6 (because that's when customization was introduced).
The average person will argue it happened in Gen 8 (because that's when we had the most bland default design so far, at least for male).
The braindead will argue it happened with either Gen 9 or 10 (the most recent ones).

The truly intelligent will agree it happened in Gen 7 (because the SM and USUM protags are the same people).

But it did.
The complaints about generic protagonists didn't start until Gen 9. Victor was bland but no one cares about the males anyway and people the customization more than made up for it.
Gen 9 had shit ugly protags AND had dogshit customization.

The "design philosophy" OP is referring to started with Arceus and SV. Gen 6-8 had customization but the default design of the girl characters were objectively better than any outfit combination you could come up with. Most Pokegirl designs are iconic and popular with fans and cosplayers. SV was the first mainline game to give you a dogshit default design and the customization was just as garbage. ZA continued with this trend and it looks like WiWa will too.
