I still watch the early seasons occasionally and not just because it's nostalgic but because it's probably the highest quality serialized anime ever made, and it was made during the peak of cel-animated anime so it has some genuinely breathtaking moments.
I don't have the webm of the last season before they switched to digital (It wasn't johto, it may have been Season 6) but there were matte paintings everywhere. They didn't need to do that, but they did it just because they knew that it was the last show in a dying animation medium.
