I always thought Rhydon was a bit too similar to Nidoking (Gen 1 in general has this problem of a lot of designs looking kinda derivative bc they didn't really know what they were doing yet). Rhyperior makes the whole land stand out a bit more. I never got the argument that it's "too different" bc like, Rhydon is also very different from Rhyhorn, so it's not like the line is a stranger to drastic design changes.

Rhydon definitely felt like a rough draft for nidoking that made its way into the final product. I also feel the same is true for Kangaskan and Nidoqueen.
